Healthy Eating For Kids

This original article was written by Darin Steen

Our children like to emulate us, so if we are eating healthy then our kids are more likely to have healthy eating habits. Perhaps healthy eating is a new venture for the entire family and trying to convince the little ones to eat healthy foods has been a bit of a struggle.

Knowing that kids prefer the sweeter things in life, try introducing them to the sweeter healthy foods such as corn, tomatoes, sweet peas, mandarin oranges, cherries and strawberries. You can also mix these sweeter foods with other healthy foods that may be less appealing such as brussel sprouts. If your kids are apprehensive about trying the healthier foods consider playing food tricks. Chopping veggies and fruits finely and mixing them in their favorite dishes will help. If burgers are a favorite in your house, finely chop or puree veggies and mix them into the burger meat when you patty the burgers. Use turkey or ground sirloin as healthier alternatives to hamburger. Casseroles can also be a fun new dish. Other healthy eating options for kids can include making fruit breads, such as banana and apple. Use real fruit, even if you buy a premixed box, you can still add real fruits to enhance flavor and nutritional value.

Healthy eating habits for kids means kids that are not overweight and are healthy. Making healthy eating choices can help the entire family get in shape and trim down and decrease the risk of many diseases. Here are some great tips and ideas that will get your kids excited about what they are eating.

· Being Creative

Kids love to be creative.

· Kids Friendly Recipes

There are many great kid friendly recipes as well as creative ways to prepare healthy and delicious foods. Kids love food that is interesting to them. Most kids love pizza right? Many will even eat it with a few vegetables mixed in. Find food that they can help create and assemble. Have different bowls of crackers, cheeses or pepperoni they can throw in their bowl.

Choose recipes that are appealing. Most kids love French fries right? Why not fix up some healthy sweet potato fries or chicken strips using wheat germ as the crust with a healthy dipping sauce.

· Shapes of Food

Another great idea is making shapes out of your food. Pancakes also make great shapes.

· Animal and Bug Shapes

There are a lot of different ways to take fruit and even vegetables and make them into bug or animal shapes. Take celery and fill it will peanut butter and dot the inside with raisins. With a little creativity, your kids are more likely to eat their fruits and vegetables.

A little bit of food coloring makes a perfect disguise. Again, kids love foods that are interesting to them.

· Drinks

Every kid loves something they can sip on. Many processed fruit drinks have a lot of added sugar. Find juices that are 100% fruit or vegetable juice. For a tasty frozen treat, you could make homemade freezer pops using the smoothie mix or fruit juices.
